THE ENABLER
over the years I have had the privilege
to be in the presence of
Elders
Healers
and
Tlamatinis
from very different
denominations
disciplines
sects
Each one and each experience is unique,
each and every time
and unlike .... anything I can articulate with words
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
IN DREAMS AWAKE
totally conscious and beyond thought,
time and space
in the present with a presence that exuded
SPIRITUALITY........
no matter how many seconds
minutes
or
hours elapsed
the present was all ways present
the past and future had disappeared
they radiate
they literally glow
the countenance of the space changes
moments in time which continue to transcend time
The one thing each of these beings have in common
is that none will ever identify themselves as
elders
or
as Healers
or
as Shamans
They are aware of their divination
and the divination in others
and do not
announce it
or
proclaim it
or
wear it
They just live it
like the tlamatini holding the obsidian mirror
so you can see yourself while they spoke.....
THANKFUL to be moments in time to meet them and BE
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Respect the seeker of Truth
and beware of those who claim
and announce that they have found it
is what I continue to hear in various inflections
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
may we each continue to live
what we profess to believe
unreservedly
wholeheartedly
sincerely
through our ACTIONS
and without apology
and never at the expense of another
who believes the total opposite of what we believe
unreservedly
wholeheartedly
sincerely
through their ACTIONS
without apology
and never at the expense of another's beliefs
anything less IS less
"The best things can't be told,"
because they transcend thought.......
"The second best are misunderstood,"
because those are the thoughts that are
supposed to refer to that which can't be
thought about,
and one gets stuck in the
thoughts.........
"The third best are what we talk about............”
FATHER SCOTT goes home...............
a sad time for all that knew this man
his good works
his words
his books
his SPIRIT
his BEINGNESS
and GENTLENESS
our hearts soar knowing he is no longer
suffering.............
FOUR DIRECTIONS
sent to me by Father Scott in 2017
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Loving Creator of all of us,
you who bring forth all of all of humanity,
we come before You at this time.
You have gathered us together
and we feel our oneness.
As we stand here on this part of Mother Earth
we gaze all around us,
and we sense the goodness
that comes to us from every direction
and we give thanks for all of your blessings
given in the past,
both as individuals
and as a struggling people
who try to make our rich past fully present
in the now and the future of all of us.
We take our place among all the peoples
of the world that you bring forth,
yet we feel a specific pride in our own unique origins,
and we take special pride in our ancestors,
no matter what original race or culture,
or ethnic group they come from.
We are all one....
because of You.
Help us to live this!
EAST
As we face the East,
we think of the rising of the sun and new beginnings.
Brighten our days,
enlighten us with wisdom,
show us the paths we must take.
Listen to us.
Be with us,
O Life-maker!
Aho!
SOUTH
As we face the South,
we recognize that we must be like the
warm winds that come up from below us.
Help us to warm the lives of others,
to encourage them when they are feeling
down or depressed.
Listen to us.
Be with us,
O Life-maker!
Aho!
WEST
As we face the West,
we think of the setting sun.
We think of our ancestors,
and right now,
of our friends and family members who
are getting ready to come to You or who
have already made that journey from this world to You.
Listen to us.
Be with us,
O Life-maker!
Aho!
NORTH
As we face the North,
we remember that cold,
harsh winds often come into our lands
and into our lives.
Sometimes we even let ourselves turn cold
to the needs of others,
especially if they are not exactly like us.
Sometimes we do not respond well to the coldness
that is in the hearts of some others.
Help us.
Listen to us.
Be with us,
O Life-maker!
Aho!

in that instant
he is surrounded by everyone and everything
he has ever loved that ever loved him
and he is carefully gathered up and held
by the arms of his ancestors
and his spirit disappears
in that instant
like the time he was on earth
and he can see his body on
the side of the mountain
and he is gone from this plain
and nothing more
but a shadow of a memory
to all those he has left behind.....

BIO/BOOKS Cornelius Ian (Scott) McCarthy is a priest of the Diocese of Monterey in California. Having spent much time with Native American communities and individuals while living and travelling throughout the Americas, he has come to recognize that the well-being of all people depends upon our proper relation to the creation, our Mother Earth. He holds two Masters Degrees as well as a Doctorate of Ministry, combining these intellectual enterprises with his own experience among many cultures. Recognizing our modern world’s difficulties with its use of cutting-edge technology combined with outmoded ways of governance, he seeks to promote the general well-being of all people by teaching the time-honored relationship between worship and personal spirituality. He now focuses his sacred work on encouraging women, men, youth, and children to take glimpses into both past and present cultures so as to visualize a better future for everyone and everything. CELEBRATING THE EARTH! An Earth-Centered Theology of Worship with Blessings, Prayers, and Rituals 1991 “We celebrate the Earth—for she is our Mother, we are her sons and daughters, and this Earth is our only home.” Father Scott’s pastoral mission is to bring diverse groups of people together as a spiritual community. Over the years he has compiled this most useful handbook for inter-faith worship to honor and celebrate our Earth, while merging a variety of cross-cultural traditions in ecumenical settings. Celebrating the Earth! provides sample ceremonies for spring renewal, a summer mid-day worship, an autumn harvest, and a winter liturgy of forgiveness. There are numerous blessings, prayers, and rituals for special occasions—for example, the blessing of animals on the feast of St. Francis of Assisi, and the Ecological Stations of the Cross (in English and Spanish)—together with a collection of services and readings which focus on “giving thanks” and reminding us that “We are All One.” The extensive Appendices include spiritual guidance and statements by indigenous leaders on the proper relationship to “all that lives,” as well as suggested Resources for pastors and leaders who can use these various ceremonies in their own communities as a way of bringing people together to pray—and to be grateful, joyful, and mindful—all through the year. https://www.amazon.com/Celebrating-Earth.../dp/0942444108 SACRAMENTS AND SHAMANS: A Priest Journeys Among Native Peoples https://www.amazon.com/Sacraments-Shamans.../dp/1577332466 2011 “Hey, friend, come and get to know us…” These are the welcoming words of invitation heard so often by Fr. Scott as he has traveled the world to meet Native peoples…first as a youth-on-a-quest, and later as a Catholic priest. Sacraments and Shamans chronicles Fr. Scott’s attraction toNative ways as a young boy, his participation in Native American ceremonies, and his eagerness to learn more about the spiritual practices and teachings of peoples in the northern and southern hemispheres—a sacred life journey that has allowed him to travel among women, men, and children of just about every human culture. As a priest and spiritual leader, with its plethora of daily sacred activities, Fr Scott has observed many local churches and ceremonies, as well as native “syncretistic” traditions, taking time to consider their origin and effectiveness for the People. As a continuing inquirer into all things spiritual, and a “people-connector”—he brings together persons of different backgrounds, cultures, or experiences to share the richness of human contact found among the many cultures and subcultures of our world. “Little by little, one friendship at a time, the whole world benefits by our connecting to each other.” PEOPLE OF THE CIRCLE, PEOPLE OF THE FOUR DIRECTIONS A Gathering of Native American Prayers, Rituals, and Traditions 2015 People of the Circle, People of the Four Directions explores the common spiritual symbols of the Native People of North and South America. Drawing on poems, stories, ceremonies, and ethnological writings, Scott McCarthy gives examples of the use of circles, the four directions, and the number four, both individually and in combination, as common themes that run through all the Native cultures of the Americas. The ceremonies and life ways presented here will encourage a sharing and understanding between cultures, as cultures meet, sometimes colliding, sometimes entwining.“ Without a sense of the Creator’s presence,it would be difficult for many human beingsto comprehend life. ”Picture the following scenarios: A Spanish soldier or Franciscan friar sometime shortly after the invasion of Mexico and an Aztec merchant: As they "size up" each other, what are the religious symbols that each wears to express a particular spirituality? A mid-nineteenth-century settler living in Wyoming greets some Cheyenne visitors at his homestead: What might be the content of their individual prayers later that night? Prayers for understanding, protection? Modern-day tourists passing through the Black Hills area, visit Bear Butte State Park (a huge mountain rising above the plains that was, and is, an ancient place of worship for several tribes) and are surprised to see and hear Sioux and Cheyenne vision questers praying and singing as they are sequestered among the bushes, trees, and rocky mountain ledges: Some are praying, others are simply enjoying the outdoors. Do they share any aspects of spirituality? https://www.amazon.com/.../ref=pd.../137-0027366-1596527... |
